Our Initial Project

The Eureka Waterfront Trail is both a dream and a reality. There are currently several small segments that are complete. They include the segment behind the Target store, along Halverson Park and the Adorni Center, the Eureka Boardwalk, and a segment through Palco Marsh.

Our initial project will be the Elk River Access Project from Truesdale Avenue to Pound Road. The Elk River trail is a relatively unknown, yet unique part of Humboldt Bay. There is currently a one mile trail in the Elk River Wildlife Sanctuary between the foot of Hilfiker Lane and Pound Road / Herrick Avenue. Improvements for this area would include:

Day use facility and parking
Interpretative signage
Addition of a trail from Truesdale to Hilfiker Ave.
Improvement of existing trail at Elk River
Improved access from the “park and ride” area at Herrick Ave.

Construction funds for this project have already been targeted through grants and local donations. However, in order to obtain these funds, matching dollars are needed to complete the permitting and engineering phase. This project will be an important link in the dream of a waterfront trail accessible to our entire community. Working together we can achieve this project!

Our future projects are going to begin with what the Eureka City Trails Committee has proposed in their Waterfront Trail & Promenade Recommendations document accepted by the Eureka City Council on May 3rd, 2005.

The Humboldt Bay Trails Feasibility Study is a look at the "big picture" of non-motorized access to and around Humboldt Bay in northwestern California. There are currently limited possibilities for people to easily access Humboldt Bay. This Study recommends ways to help the public become more familiar with the bay, with the primary long-term goal of fostering bay stewardship.
